Javelina Love Story: Fred & Joan Nuesch

56 Years of Love, Legacy & Javelina Pride

This Valentine’s Day, we’re celebrating a love story that began right here at Javelina Nation and continues to fill our campus with pride.

Some love stories are written in the stars.
Theirs was written in Blue and Gold.

Meet Fred and Joan Nuesch,
Their story began at an after-party following a Javelina basketball game, surrounded by friends, laughter, and Javelina spirit.

Joan’s journey to Kingsville is one of legacy and dedication. Born in Jamaica to Canadian parents, she later lived in Canada before her family settled in Kingsville, Texas. Her father, Dr. Howe, was hired at this University as Professor of Agriculture and Director of the Division of Agriculture. The agriculture building would later be named in his honor. A lasting mark of the family’s impact on campus.

Joan graduated from Texas A&I University in 1958 before continuing her education to become a Medical Technologist. For 37 years, she faithfully served the Kingsville community through her work in local clinics caring for generations of families.

Fred’s path to Kingsville began in Arkansas. After earning his certificate at Texas A&I, he built a remarkable career that would span nearly six decades. He became Head of Journalism and worked alongside legendary Coach Steinke. In fact, he was personally asked by then-university president James Jernigan to continue his work at the institution. Today, Fred has dedicated 58 years to the university. A testament to his loyalty and love for the place that shaped his life.

Fifty-six beautiful years of marriage their love story grew in the heart of Javelina Nation, and it has never strayed far from it.

Fred and Joan were married on December 27, 1969 — and 56 years later, they are still active goers to all sporting events and university gatherings. Their lives have remained intertwined not only with each other, but with the campus community that first brought them together.

They describe their love as being blessed with divine guidance.

Their love started surrounded by Javelina Pride, and it continues there still.

Happy Valentine’s Day, Javelinas. 💛🐗
